ALEPH

ALEPH
(a book review that is not)

This is one more book by Paulo Coelho. It talks about I – probably representing Paulo himself – that feels his need of tracing back his past life haunting him up to now. His master J ensures him that I should move. This is what he said.

“There’s no point sitting here, using words that mean nothing. Go and experiment. It’s time you got out of here. Go and re-conquer your kingdom, which has grown corrupted by routine. Stop repeating the same lesson, because you won’t learn anything new that way.” (J in Aleph, p10)

He then follows the direction he wants to go regardless things uneasy he has faced all the way to his plan. He has his publishers arrange a journey on a train covering Trans-Siberian Railway from Moscow to Vladivostok.

Actually his initial plan is going with his publishers (book publishing team) and a translator but then a girl named Hilal who happens to appear since his book launching in Moscow. Since then that girl never wants to leave him. This girl is a violinist that is being uneasy about her own life in which so many years she has felt so depressed of being a victim of sexual harassment.

I, with Hilal next to him, feels the power of searching his own self – the lost un-explained part of life. Within the train journey I keeps reckoning why the girl is so attached to him. I believes that there is a correlation between them. And, yes there is. These two characters: I and Hilal are actually two figures coming out in a time of Inquisition in old Spain. Hilal is indeed one the tools with which I is able to untie the strong knot curling around his consciousness.

Paulo uses Present Tenses in the whole book to underline that all happens at present. Past, Present and Future are actually bound together – now and here.

Seemingly, Paulo also plays with the readers’ mind. All is his game of twisting mind. He makes me believe that mind is the major part of human that matters in strengthening their own process finding their life essence. Mind is where all is stored including the past life experience. Past life experience – at least for me – makes sense. It can be rendered with certain methods. In the book, I does “ring of fire” as his method several times to show the possible practice by the writer himself in his real life.

From this novel what I get is the things above plus one thing: forgiveness. You can’t forward your life to the future you except with your forgiveness. You can’t love without forgiving. You can’t optimize the quality of your life but with forgiveness. Forgiveness is an important key to the smoothness of understanding the great design of mind Creator.

Reading this novel is not only refreshing my mind on the importance of keeping a faith of mine but also the simplicity of how to keep it. Other readers – you – may have many more things to learn from his work.

By the way, how can we keep the faith? Go back to the key: forgive!

Salute to a great man in a great writer: Paulo Coelho.
